Bhubaneswar : Smt. Nandini Satpathy Memorial Trust (SNSMT) today observed the World Environment Day by organising plantation drives in several parts of Odisha. The same was inaugurated here by SNSMT Chairman and noted socio-political leader Shri. Suparno Satpathy. Today, in a single day, SNSMT volunteers and members have planted 35,000 trees.
On the occasion Shri. Satpathy besides planting a tree himself, addressed the gathering. He said ” It is imperative for all of us to understand that no amount of development or so called modernisation is worth it if its not in sync with nature. If we abuse the environment , it will tolerate till a point but then it will hit us back with double vengeance and unfortunately planet Earth is the only home we have. Today let’s redouble our pledge to protect the environment and protect ourselves. I am with nature, I urge upon all of you to be with me or else non of us will be”.

World Environment Day was first held in 1974 by the United Nations (UN) to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the protection of the environment. In the past many years, over 143 countries have started participating in it.
Notably the then Chief Minister of Odisha Smt. Nandini Satpathy was the one who had inaugurated the first World Environment Day here on 5 June 1974.
